The History of BIS

Brasilia International School was founded in September of 1999 as Brasilia International Academy by the Network of International Christian Schools. The school was located in Asa Norte and was attended by 11 students from 6 different countries. In 2000, Brasilia International Academy changed its name to Brasilia International School and moved to the International Baptist Church in Lago Sul. In 2001 it moved to a separate facility in QI 19, where the school continued to grow.

By the end of the 2002 school year, BIS had over 80 students from 20 countries. The school continued to grow and serve students from all over the world. In 2006, BIS gained accreditation by SACS and ACSI. In August of 2008, BIS moved to its current facility in SGAS 914 Asa Sul. The new location gave BIS 15 large classrooms, a computer lab, a large science lab, a brand new library and media center, a soccer field, two sports courts, and much more. In the 2009-2010 school year, BIS added a new playground and renovated several classrooms.

BIS was recognized as an International School by the National Council of Education of Brazil and became a member of the Association of American Schools of Brazil. BIS also further expanded the Summer Camp and Preschool programs to accommodate more Brazilian students. In the 2010-2011, BIS expanded its secondary course offerings by offering online courses through NorthStar Academy. NorthStar is a fully accredited online school which is also a member school of the Network of International Christian Schools. In November 2011, BIS successfully completed a joint re-accreditation with AdvancED and ACSI. BIS is fully accredited until July 2017.

The 2012-2013 school year brought a new ventilation system and air conditioners for the Elementary Building. 2013-2014 school year added a new large turf-covered soccer field and renovations to our covered area. New paint, new furniture, and new computers were added to enhance our campus.

The 2014-2015 school year brought "The Loft" (High School Chapel room), the Online Learning Center for students taking NorthStar Academy classes, a new Canteen for the STUCO to sell snacks during break time, and a complete makeover for our Library! Air Conditioners were also added to our Secondary classrooms, front lobby, as well as, our Administrative offices. The school grew to over 140 students from 29 different countries around the world!

In August 2015, the parents were very excited to see more renovations completed. Multiple improvements to the grounds and drainage systems, addition of many plants, new dressing rooms for athletics, beautiful flag poles, and "The Landing" (Elementary Chapel room). Many technology improvements were also made with new teacher computers, tablets for student use, and projectors are now installed in every classroom. Currently, BIS has over 150 students from 34 countries!
